The Devil Made Me Do It Race Results & Report

IMG_0486October 25th, 2015 saw the fourth running of the Devil Made Me Do It 6.66 Mile Road Race in Glastonbury, CT. This annual event, which also included the Not-So-Devilish 3.33 Miler, took place on an appropriately dark and gloomy day. And people got into the spirit of the day with Super Heroes, My Little Ponies, Inner Tube twins, The Mad Hatter, and plenty of Devils taking part.

When all was said and done, 13 year old Charles Brydges from Somers crossed the finish line first. This up and coming runner posted a 1:26 in the Harford Half Marathon earlier this month. The first female finisher was Sarah Smiga from the host town of Glastonbury. In the 3.33 mile race, Oliveras Maximo  from East Hartford was the overall winner and Laura Becker from Bolton the first female finisher.

Hartland Harvest Race Report

169The 2nd annual Hartland Harvest Run, hosted by the Bethany Lutheran Church, took place on Saturday, October 17th in East Hartland. On a crisp fall day, runners ran on rolling hills in this rural town while enjoying peak fall foliage. After the race, runners and spectators warmed up with corn chowder while rehashing the race and cheering for the award winners.

TFirst Placehe first female to cross the finish line was Joan Makowski in 23:06, followed by Erin Pirro and Katie Ouelette. The overall male finisher was Tyler Schumacher who, at the age of 10, completed the race in a blistering 19:43. He was closely followed by his brothers Jeffrey and Josh. In fourth place overall was Roger Visknes, Pastor of Bethany Church.  For full race results click here

Like last year, members of the 169 Society showed up enforce and made their presence known, cheering on their fellow runners and well representing themselves in the awards.

Hop River 5K and 10K Race Recap & Results

The 2015 edition of the Hop River 5K and 10K took place Aug 8th on a beautiful summer day.

Both races took place on the Hop River Rail Trail in the small New England town of Andover,

The races had staggered starts with the 10K starting first. The runners headed east on the trail,

going over bridges and through a culvert under route 6 before turning around in Columbia and

heading back, finishing at the Andover Senior Center.

Times were fast on this flat and shady course. Coming in first place was Bacon Academy runner

Jeffrey Noonan in a time of 36:17, followed by Michael Keenan of South Glastonbury in 36:51

and Nick Ferron from Storrs in 38:10. The top female finisher was Aimee Patel from Hamden in

42:15, followed by Kelly Labanara from Chaplin in 43:16 and Reagin Curran from New Haven in

44:05.

The 5K started five minutes later, also traveling east on the trail. Just past the one mile mark,

runners left the trail, circled around the Benjamin Franklin Plumbing property and under an old

railroad tressle before re-entering the trail and on to the finishline. The top three finishers were

Roberto Plutto in 17:07, Kevin Verge in 18:28, and Brian Murray in 18:58. On the women’s side

it was Suzanne Poidrier in 21:40, Marianella Chalfant in 23:41 and Mary Schollin 24:10. Area

running legend Irene Burke also completed the 5K at the age of 82.

This year, Yankee Restoration & Remodeling was the presenting sponsor. DuBois Automotive

and Benjamin Franklin Plumbing also sponsored. A total of $600 was donated to the Andover

Food Pantry as well as a car load of food. Organizers are already planning for the 2016 race,

which will be held on Aug. 13th.

Michael Walsh 5K Race Results and Report

On a fine Sunday of 28th June 2015, the Michael E. Walsh Memorial 5K took place. The race held on Rentshler Field, 615 Silver Lane, East Hartford, CT is on the Memory of the Connecticut Runner Michael Walsh . The race was presented by “Medical Oncology and Blood Disorders LLP”. All proceeds benefit FISH ( Friends In Service to Humanity). Earlier at 8.30pm, a fun run held for kids too.

The first one one to finish the race was Julian Saud from Trumbull in a time of 16:40.98 . The first female to finish the race was Ann Shields from Torrington in a time of 19:04.90 which took her to the 7th place overall.The youngest person to finish the race was Jake Duckworth from Monroe in a time of 17:15.29, lead him to Third Overall.

My Sister’s Place 5K Race Report & Results

2015 Race DayThe Second Annual My Sister’s Place 5K took place on Sunday, June 14, on a gorgeous spring morning. Taking place entirely on the campus of the University of Hartford, this scenic, gently rolling course is becoming a favorite among local runners. This year, Hartford Toyota was again the presenting sponsor and many other area businesses helped with their support.

This year, the first runner to complete the course was Neal Leibowitz  from South Windsor in a time of 18:50 and the first female was Stacy Clark from East Berlin, second overall. The youngest 5K finisher was Ethan Smith, age 5, from Bristol. The first walker to complete the 2 Mile course was Rebecca Shinkoff from South Windsor.

There was also team competition. A total of 21 teams entered. The award for Fastest Team went to Hartford Toyota. The Most Generous Team was Naubuc School, the Biggest Team was Easier Said Than Run, and the Most Playful Team was Winner Circle Community Movement.

After the race, runners enjoyed post-race bagels, fruit, granola bars, homemade cornbread donated by Smokin With Chris Restaurant, and much camaraderie.

2015 Race Day IIAll in all close to 200 runners and walkers participated. My Sister’s Place helps Hartford area women and their children who are homeless and victims of domestic violence. Their goal for this event was to raise money to fund a playground for their clients and they are well on their way.

Jubilee Run Race Report & Results

The Enfield Montessori School is celebrating its fiftieth year with a number of events. The latest

was last Saturday’s Jubilee Run which, in spite of rainy conditions, drew almost 100 enthusiastic

runners and walkers.

 

Things began with a kid’s fun run where 25 young runners raced around a ¼ mile course all

finishing as winners. The 5 K run and 2 mile walk was next. The first runner to cross the finish

line was Matthew Mangold from Manchester in 21:14 and the first female was Taylor Page from

Suffield, 4th overall. Ironically, the first walker was Cheryl Walker from Somers. Afterward, all

participants enjoyed homemade baked goods.

All in all, everyone had a great time and now there is talk of a 51st anniversary 5K. For complete

Spring Glen 5K Race Results

IMG_0677The first Spring Into Spring Glen 5K took off on a beautiful spring day and was, by all measures, a huge success.. Held at Hamden’s Spring Glen Elementary School this was a real community event and benefited the school’s PTA . The day’s activities started with a Kid’s Race. 80 young runners navigated the ¼ mile course on school grounds and all crossed the finish line as winners.

Next up was the 5K Race and 2 ½ Mile Walk. Traversing the neighborhood around the school and finishing down Whitney Ave, the first to cross the finish line was Jeffrey Townsend in 18:13, followed by Tyler Heywood in 18:37 and Joseph Shapiro in 19:47. The first female finisher was Amanda Pellowe, in second place was Stephanie Barnett, and in third place Mary Glickman. The youngest 5k runner was Bryan Cupano, age 5, and the most senior runner 89 year old Herman Bershtein. When it was all said and done, 225 runners and 45 walkers registered

Thanks goes out to the Hamden High school track team who provided enthusiastic volunteers on the kid’s race and along the course. And to the friends and supporters of the Spring Glen PTA who manned registration. And a big thanks to the Hamden Police Dept whose presence insured a safe course for all participants. And lastly, to Marc Goldberg, Spring Glen parent, whose idea this was and who, with his wife Judy, invested countless hours into making this event happen.

Strong Family Chicken Run Results & Photos

IMG_0254It looks like spring is finally starting to show itself and runners everywhere are celebrating. Nowhere was this more evident than at the 2nd Annual Strong Family Chicken Run where close to 400 runners, walkers and kids participated. Once again the race enjoyed the support of volunteers from CERTS, the Police Cadets, and the many friends of Strong Farm.

Local Vernon runners led the way with Brian Nelson winning the overall race in 17:09 and with Jillian Ellefson the first female to cross the finish line in 23:18.  Michael Ingram of Manchester and Zoltan Rigo of Berlin were the second and third place finishers and Lauren Hurst of West Simsbury and Erica Lebaron of Tolland the second and third female finishers.

Lyme Road Race Results & Photos

IMG_0140April 11, 2015 marked the first time that a timed road race took place in the Town of Lyme and over 200 runners and walkers came out to celebrate the occasion. On possibly the perfect day for a run, they made their way down country roads past farms and historic homes and on to the finish line at Ashlawn Farm. Ashlawn Farm; scenic dairy farm turned coffee roaster was the ideal location to stage the event. The two loop course was slightly rolling and got high reviews from all participants.

Results

First to cross the finish line was Kevin Turko of West Hartford in 16:37, followed by Brian Whitney of Groton and Bruce Christenson of Bolton. Heidi Decosta of Niantic was the first female finisher in 20:36, followed by local runner Winnie Edmed of Lyme and Melanie Champion of Meridian. All six received $50 gift certificates from Soundview runner.

Cupid Made Me Do It! Race Report & Results

IMG_0485Why would people go out in mid-February with the thermometer at minus 5 to run 2 miles through howling winds over ice and snow? The answer is simple: Cupid made them do it.  The third running of the Cupid Made Me Do It Urban Challenge in Willimantic went off on schedule and 105 dedicated runners and walkers braved conditions to cross the finish line. They came in all shapes, sizes, and ages from throughout the state to test their mettle. They represented all eight Connecticut counties and parts of Massachusetts. The award for traveling  the farthest went to Erin Gionet from Stratham, New Hampshire.  Hester Maisfehlt of Chester was the youngest finisher at age 5 who crossed the finish line just ahead of her dad William. And the most senior finisher was Thomas McIntosh, Jr; 77 and going strong. As usual, the members of the 169 Society were well represented, with 35+ members making the most noise cheering on their fellow competitors.

 

IMG_0445After the race, most participants continued to celebrate Valentine’s Day by taking part in Willimantic’s Chocolate Festival. If you missed out on this year’s event, don’t worry, plans are already underway for next year’s Cupid Made Me Do It, which will be held on February 13, 2016. Online registration will open tomorrow (Monday, February 16) and anyone registering between now and the end of February can do so for $19 or a $6 discount, and be guaranteed of a T-Shirt.  Hope to see you next year.

The overall winner was Charlie Grillo from Cromwell in a blistering 5:46 pace, followed by Steven Pellerin from Dayville and Edward Guimant from Vernon. The top three female finishers Lauren Stanley from Stafford Springs with a 6:59 pace, followed by Breanna Cubilla of Norwich and Shannon Kievman of Manchester.  Awards were presented to the top three finishers in eight age groups with the age group winners receiving gourmet cupcakes from A Cupcake For Later.  Complete results can be found here.
